The Wellness Walk
Through the lens of functional medicine and functional nutrition, steeped in a client-centered approach, we recognize the biochemical individuality in the people we help heal. In viewing the dynamic balance of internal & external influences on one's body, we address root causes of dis-ease and dys-function for organ reserve. With appreciation for the weblike interconnectedness of mind, body & spirit, we see health as a positive vitality, not just the absence of disease.
This is a medicine of connection and I am a Functional Medicine Nutritionist. Let's take a wellness walk together.
For the Honor That Dog book that is set to be published this year, if you'd like to receive updates for when it will be available or to submit a pet loss story for the book, send me a message by clicking below:

What is Functional Medicine?
A practice of restoring function in the body – shifting dysfunction to optimal function, in the cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and the organism (YOU).
Instead of looking at health as the absence of disease, this is about the presence of vitality.
Practicing Functional Nutrition through the Functional Medicine lens, we bring into focus a triad approach to healing; Evidence-based medicine + Practitioner experience + Client contribution. This work is predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory.
Functional Medicine can also be thought of as upstream medicine, i.e. symptoms are downstream effects from damaged cells and dysfunctioning systems upstream. Root cause resolution is aimed at resolving upstream causes of downstream patterns.
This is a thorough practice of addressing common pain points (physical, mental, and emotional symptoms), like fatigue, headaches, joint pain, anxiety, leaky gut, dysbiosis, and lack of motivation, by restoring cellular function. When, for instance, the body’s wireless cellular communication comes back online, the terrain of the gut and gut health can improve, and begin resolving immune and hormone insufficiency.
Functional Medicine has its roots in the concepts extensively researched and deployed by Dr. Linus Pauling’s work (molecular geneticist, quantum physicist), known as Orthomolecular Medicine. This practice holds the viewpoint that dysfunction and disease can ultimately be attributed to deficiencies in the internal environment, creating suboptimal conditions at the cellular level.
For example, deficiencies of micronutrients or malnutrition diminish our immune and other systems downstream. This is referred to as hidden hunger when one lacks vitamins and minerals.
Enroot Wellness identifies these deficiencies through bloodwork interpretation, food sensitivity testing, muscle testing, and more.
Our Targeted Insights
Bloodwork Analysis
Identify clinical imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and patterns of decreased function. Find out what your blood (as a vital life force) can tell you about your current & future health, so that you can be more involved in your health and healing.
Food Sensitivities
Explore what foods may be contributing to symptoms like gas, digestive discomfort, headaches, mood shifts, poor sleep, through a simple blood test. Removing food insults lowers the threshold of inflammation, leaky gut & overall discomfort.
Wellness Plans
Get a functional evaluation based on systematic assessment of current pain points, targeted areas of concern, and goals of improving health & vitality, energy & metabolism. Basic and Comprehensive options available.
Frequently Asked Questions About Functional Medicine-Based Nutritional Health Care
Q: Are visits virtual or in-person?
A: Your visit with Enroot Wellness can be in person, via phone, or over video conferencing.
Q: What does the intake paperwork entail?
A: Good question! We want to meet you where you’re at, so there are a couple options to get started.
1. Complete a Metabolic Questionnaire which takes 10-15 minutes. Answers are not shared publicly and you will receive an email with a metabolic fitness result along with next steps from Enroot Wellness.
2. If you know what this work is all about, you’ve been looking for a functional medicine practitioner, or a holistic nutritionist, and ready to jump in, please visit this page for completing the intake paperwork. Three questionnaires will take about an hour to complete, but does not have to be done all at once. This gives us a more comprehensive health history to get to know you better, your family history, your story, current pain points, and health goals. This is upstream medicine, so more information helps us help you more.
Q: How long will my healing process take?
A: Alleviating your unwanted symptoms is the primary goal in our work with you. We aim for root cause resolution, and peeling back the layers of dysfunction. For some the recognizable healing happens within days to weeks. For others the onion has many layers, with more information discovered inside each tier. Consider that it took your body (10, 20, 30+) years to arrive at this place, after years and perhaps decades of time to manifest these current health patterns. Many times the machinery is not faulty, but the body’s signaling mechanisms have been interrupted, and the cell-to-cell communication system has gone offline, so to speak. We meet you where you’re at. Providing new signals can jump-start the body’s capacity to heal. It is akin to a puzzle, and we will take a deep detective dive into your body, your unique story, and offer tailored support along the way.
Q: Do you accept insurance?
A: Short answer, no. Long answer, in general, insurance companies are not focused on preventive or wellness services. They are heavily invested in the conventional model of healthcare that too often relies on drugs and surgery. We are committed to the functional medicine model that addresses the underlying causes of your symptoms with specific nutritional and lifestyle recommendations. Nutritionists are currently not reimbursed for services provided, even when these are aimed at preventative care. The upside? You have complete personal governance surrounding your health + healing, and will not be influenced by or impeded by obstacles in place with our current conventional medical system. Your body is your temple, and we hope you choose Enroot Wellness to be a conduit to your healing.
Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: All forms accepted: PayPal, Venmo, cash or check are preferred, credit card payment via Intuit (Quickbooks) also available. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please bring this to our attention.
Q: What should I bring to my first session?
A: We like to say, “All you need is love, and some curiosity.” It is also helpful to bring a picture (or list) of all pharmaceutical drugs currently being taken on a regular basis, along with supplements (front and back labels), unless we have already covered this within the intake paperwork.
Q: Some Functional Medicine practitioners do a lot of tests, is that similar to Enroot Wellness’ approach?
A: Using specialized training in bloodwork interpretation (Higher Order Health, LLC, Dr. Bryan Walsh), Enroot Wellness can determine a lot through basic blood chemistry tests (CBC/CMP, lipid panel, HbA1c, etc). We can utilize recent tests or order basic lab work, without requiring the investment in more expensive tests. That being said, more comprehensive testing is always an option as well.
Q: Should I get bloodwork done through my doctor?
A: Short answer, not yet. Longer answer, blood chemistry tests typically reflect the previous 3 months (approximately). So if you have labs (or can retrieve them from your doctor or your health portal) and you want to have a bloodwork analysis done, we absolutely can! Enroot Wellness will analyze these results using ideal/optimal ranges to evaluate micronutrient deficiencies, dysfunction, and imbalances. If you have not had labs done within the past 3 months, it is best to have a consult with Enroot Wellness first. We will discuss primary pain points (physical, mental, and emotional symptoms) to determine what tests should be run, if outside of Enroot’s basic blood chemistry panel (“Forest” or “Roots” Blood Tests), see next question for more information.
Q: Can I get bloodwork done through you? How much would this cost?
A: Yes. Enroot Wellness can order what’s termed a “requisition form” specifying which tests are to be run, along with the address of the nearest LabCorp draw location, for you to get your blood drawn. The cost will vary, depending on what we discover in our initial session together. A blood chemistry panel which includes things like a white blood cell differential, lipid panel, thyroid levels, and a metabolic panel is currently about $118 (Forest), and to include hormones within the blood test $214 (Roots). We would then meet to review a Functional Health Report developed just for you with results and next steps. With this detailed plan you are brought into the fold at every step as we discuss your preferences for addressing patterns/imbalances via lifestyle, nutrition, stress management, and supplement support. There are many ways to gain vitality and heal, and no one way is right for all. Let’s take a Wellness Walk.
